1st timothy 1:9-10
After giving the explanation for 1st Corinthians 6:9-10, the explanation for 1st Timothy 1:9-10 will be
much easier. All you have to do is keep in mind that the word “homosexual” is often times incorrectly
put in place of another word or phrase, such as “effeminate” or “abusers of themselves with
mankind.” And in one of the verses about to be discussed, there is a phrase that sounds very similar
to “abusers of themselves with mankind.” It’s “them that defile themselves with mankind.”
1st Timothy 1:9-10 says: “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the
lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of
fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,"
"For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for
perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;”
That was the King James Version description. There are some Bible translations that try to put
“homosexual” in place of “whoremongers” or “them that defile themselves with mankind.”
“Whoremonger” comes from the Greek word “pornos,” which means “a man who indulges in
fornication or prostitution.” A heterosexual man can easily fit that description.
As for the phrase “them that defile themselves with mankind,” there are different examples that
“defile” could be used. You can defile something by making it foul or unclean. You can defile
yourself by corrupting one’s self via destructive, ungodly morals. You can defile another person
through abuse, whether physical or sexual. But of course, in this particular Bible phrase, it’s
speaking more in terms of the latter (sexual abuse).
At the end of the day, verse 10 of 1st Timothy, chapter 1 is just another verse that is incorrectly used
to put down gays.
Now let’s take a quick look at something that is usually overlooked in verse 10. It’s the word
“menstealers.” It comes from the Greek word “andrapodistes.” It means “slave dealer, man-stealer,
and kidnapper.” So someone labeled as “andrapodistes” would be a person who uses his power to
capture other free men and children to put them into some type of slavery, or is a dealer in a
slave-trade business to import and export slaves to different areas.
With all of that said, it is no coincidence that the word “arsenokoitai” (them that defile themselves
with mankind) is placed right in the middle of “pornos” (whoremonger) and “andrapodistes”
(menstealers/kidnappers) on verse 10‘s list. Because an "arsenokoitai" man will not only sexually use
and abuse the whores and prostitutes of “pornos,” but he may also be an “andrapodistes” by
enslaving men and children and selling or trading them in different types of slave-trade rings,
including the sex slave-trades. Again, we see another instance of children being involved in sex abuse.
This may be why, in the 1966 German version of the Jerusalem Bible, the word “arsenokoitai” is
translated as “child molesters.”
