sodom
Many preachers today will say that the sin of the city of Sodom was being gay and that it was essentially
destroyed because of homosexuality. This is very incorrect. There were many sinsthat caused the demolition.
The main sin actually being a lack of “hospitality” (friendly, welcoming, and generous treatment offered to
guests or strangers). And if you have never read about the destruction of Sodom for yourself, I strongly
suggest that you do. It begins in Chapter 19 of Genesis. Basically, the story is about two angels who visit a
man named Lot. Lot takes them into his home to show them hospitality. But the men of Sodom come up to
his door and demand to “know” (have sex with) the angels. The men even made threats and tried to break
into Lot’s home to rape the angels. Long story short, the angels struck the men with blindness so they could
not break in. And, before Sodom was destroyed, the angels led Lot and hisfamily out of the city to safety.
Now, there is something interesting about this story: In chapter 19, verse 8, Lot evenoffers his two virgin
daughters to the men to try to talk them out of raping the angels.
Question! If Lot lived in Sodom (which he did), do you not think he would know if the men of that city were all
gay or not? Of course he would know! So if he offered his virgin DAUGHTERSto the men to have sex with, the
men were obviously NOT gay. Otherwise, Lot would not have offered them. The men were not concerned
with gender. They simply saw some strangers in their town that were outnumbered and they wanted to abuse
and humiliate them. In other words, they were very prideful and wanted to show their dominance by trying to
rape the angels.
By the way, if you go to the previous chapter to this one in Genesis (chapter 18), you will witness a
conversation between God and Abraham about whether or not He will save any of the residents of Sodom
(and how many) before He destroys it. In other words, God was already planning to destroy Sodom because
of their grievous sinning (18:20) BEFORE the story of the attempted gang rape even happened. Therefore,
you HAVE to know that the city of Sodom was destroyed because of it’s non-stop sinning, not homosexuality.
The list of sins of Sodom includes inhospitality, rape, greed, and arrogance. And some modern Christians may
have a hard time grasping the importance of hospitality in these cultural and biblical settings.
Did you know that the word “nice” originally used to mean thingslike “stupid,” “foolish” and “ignorant?” The
word “awful” at one point meant “full of awe” (like awesome).”What is my point? Well, you have to be careful.
Because sometimes the definitions of words get changed over time. And in some instances, they are changed
based off of the majority’s opinions and prejudices. For example, “nigger” once meant “ignorant.” Now some
dictionaries say a nigger is “ a black person or a dark-skinned person.” The same has happened to homosexuals. Gay used to simply mean “happy.” And although this isn’t very offensive to us, “sodomite” is.
You see, nowadays, prejudice people who think the destruction of Sodom was caused by homosexuality,
like to call gays “sodomites.” But originally the word sodomite was simply a person… from the city of Sodom.
Just like a Moabite would be someone from the city of Moab.
